Transport Empty, 2017
Single channel sound installation.
Collaboration with Joseph Rosenzweig
Transport Empty is a sixty-minute-long looped sound installation derived from field recordings made at various worksites: a commercial kitchen, a cabinetmaker’s shop, a construction site, a grocery store, an auto mechanic shop, a machine shop, a dry cleaner’s, and other locations. The sixty minutes that comprise the loop are equally divided into a series of ‘scenes’ and silences: each scene is preceded by a period of silence lasting exactly as long as the scene that follows it. Thus, the auditor's experience of the piece becomes structured by these alternations between the depiction of waged work and the silences counted out in its measure. The 'silent' reprieve that follows each statement is registered as an echo, an excitation of the concrete space in which the auditor is situated.
